I am visiting friends in California this summer and wonder what goodies I might be able to take for them. What snacks, foods, etc can only be found on the East Coast of the US? I have heard that Tastycake is a regional thing - is that true?

Or is everything national anyway, so I shouldn’t bother?

I think most food items are available nationwide.

But what you may do is bring a gift form yoru local area. Maybe a charity cookbook (I always love Jr. League cookbooks), some locally-harvested honey, maybe maple syrup if you are from Vermont, maybe a locally-made jam/jelly that is popular, something like that.

If you are in the Carolinas or Ga, bring fresh peaches. If in Ga, maybe peanuts or real Vidalia onions. A bag of whole pecan halves may be welcome, and probably pretty expensive in CA.

You pretty much answered your own question. Don’t bother, it is probably true that everything is national; there is no goody that can’t be found any place else in the U.S. in this e-commerce era. People can get pretty much anything with the click of their computer mouse and get the goodies sitting comfortably in their own home by paying some substantial amount of shipping and handling charges now a day.

Scrapple sounds good but you’ll probably never get foreigners to try it. I’m pretty sure UTZ Potato Chips, big as the are here in the Mid Atlantic, are only regional.
