I was a gummi bear fanatic long before they hit American shores. I lived in West Germany and discovered them there before they were sold in the USA. (I still refer to them as goom–ee bears. The way they say it in Deutchland.)

Anyone else have a food, snack or candy they knew of long before the rest of the populace?

I discovered rambutans when I visited Singapore. I don’t think that they are available anywhere but in that area to this day. They are a weird fruit about the size of an orange but more elongated with a funny bumpy rind and a taste similar to a giant white grape.
If I am mistaken and you can get them here in the US, please tell me where!!
I enjoy deep fried slugs - I don’t think it has caught on yet. Yummy. Especially with salt - it’s like pop-rocks.
I grew my own soybeans and made my own tofu before you could buy it in stores, does that count?
