Hi, I’m french, in France we have a lot of McDonald’s, but that’s all I think (and a french store called Quick, but far less popular). In fact we often buy sandwiches at baker’s (with good bread and all good stuff).
But we eat also a lot of kebab, I don’t know if you have it in America, it’s Arabic food.
French culture and snack foods?
Impossible.
The French eat well at meal time and seldom require a ’snack’, but if they do snack it would be fresh fruit, a pastry or perhaps a small piece of chocolate.
The French do not eat snack foods. They are very into good food….although there are McDonald’s all over the place. They eat fruit as a snack, but it hardly qualifies as such. There are many sidewalk vendors who sell sandwiches , cheese and fruit for lunch. But as to being a snack food nation, no, they are not !
In France, there are the snacks that you know and are recalled as junk food and some other snacks, which you cannot fin in US, like kebab, shaworma, gyros.
Döner kebab - as it is called - is described as a dish from Asia Minor, consisting of mutton grilled on horizontal rotating skewers. Traditionally, it was served on a plate with rice and a hot sauce with melted butter and ground paprika.
Shaworma is a Lebanonian snack, cooked almost the same as the kebab. However, instead of mutton, they use chicken or viel grilled on horizontal rotating skewers. It contains also cabbage, tomatoes, paprika, cucumbers, onion and a special garlic sauce. Some use mayonnaise. Traditionally, it was served wrapped in a special made manioc.
The gyros is a Hungarian snack, out of olive oil, mustard, lemon juice, garlic, dried oregano, boneless pork, yogurt, cucumber, dill, pita loaves, halved and small red onion\raw, peeled and thinly sliced.
